As some of you may know school has always been a hard thing for me. I try not to dwell on it and jut do my best but at times it scary and confusing. There are other people out there that have problems in school as well. I am going to focus a little bit on college athletes and the standards that they have to abide by when it comes to academics.
Earlier this week Anthony Tucker who was a member of the Iowa men's basketball team was indefinitely suspended after his GPA fell below the limits set by the NCAA and the Big Ten (Eleven) Conference. To my knowledge Tucker was a freshman and after doing a little research that means that all he has to do for the first semester is get at least a 1.65 GPA and after by the end of the second semester (first year) he has to have a 1.80 GPA. I know that most schools will allow a coach to recruit and the school will admit a couple players a year if they do not meet the schools standards but once they are in they must adhere to the ncaa's and their conference guidelines. However I did not know that the guidelines were this low.
I am currently on academic warning which means that my GPA dropped below 2.0. I know that athletes are treated differently but there is a HUGE difference between 1.65 and 2.0. I can get kicked out of the school for having a GPA below 2.0 and they just get kicked off the team for gpa's at or below 1.65!
I really do not know how they can have grades that low. Every school requires their athletes to put a certain amount of time each week in at "study tables", which is where they go somewhere to study with other athletes and tutors just for them (here at ISU they go to the third floor of the Hixson-Lied Student Success Center, the whole third floor is just for them). A friend of mine that is on the softball team here has told me that she has to put in at least 10 hours a week just at the study tables, which equates to about two hours a night. Some schools do this and also employ glorified babysitters that go to classes that the athletes are in to make sure they go to class and stay for the whole class period, others have electronic tracking systems to do the same thing. It floors me that some schools will put this much effort and money into making sure their athletes maintain their d or c- average. I know that most athletes do maintain at least a 2.0 or better and a lot have very good gpa's, while succeeding in competition as well. Just last year a female track runner here at ISU graduated after three years, she also happened to win a couple national titles and demolish a record or two at the same time. She is now on the cross country team and in grad school here.
I met with my advisor earlier this week to figure out what will best help me to succeed this semester and get back on the track to academic success, so far so good. I have been doing very will in meteorology and I feel my other classes are going just as well. I had several people tell me this past week that they enjoy my posts, if you do too please let me know by e-mail to jbcook89@gmail.com I would also like to know your comments and suggestions! I am hoping to go home next weekend depending on if I can get a ride or not and if the weather will co-operate. Thanks for listening to my rant today! Have a great weekend! GO STATE!!! GOD BLESS!!!
